Pennywise

California represents for many around the world a symbol of power and possibility—a place where dreams can come true… or turn into nightmares. A cultural epicenter, this mythical state is marked by monumental milestones: from the silent film era to Skid Row, from Disneyland to Ronald Reagan, from celebrity excess to social riots. Iconic albums like Straight Outta Compton, Suffer, Master of Puppets, and Fresh Fruit for Rotting Vegetables have shaped this image. As the late Tupac Shakur aptly put it: “We riot, not rally.”
Few bands embody the Californian spirit with as much vitality and endurance as Pennywise, a true institution born in Hermosa Beach. Off the beaten path of the mainstream, they dominate Southern California radio waves and festivals worldwide, carried by generations of loyal fans.
Pennywise effortlessly fuses the subversive and the festive. Their albums are packed with fast, powerful anthems crafted for personal empowerment, social rebellion, wild partying, and carefree moments. On paper, this might seem contradictory. On record, it sounds like California.
Three decades after their DIY beginnings, tracks like Same Old Story, Fuck Authority, Alien, Homesick, and Bro Hymn have become fundamental punk and hardcore classics—just as essential as stage dives and distorted guitars.
The explosive chemistry between the band’s strong creative personalities fuels a dynamic that produces some of the genre’s most powerful songs. This creative tension is the basis of a process that brings out the best in each member to forge a coherent and impactful whole.
The album Never Gonna Die, the first full-length of new songs with Jim Lindberg (vocals), Fletcher Dragge (guitar), Byron McMackin (drums), and Randy Bradbury (bass) in over ten years, arrives at the right time. Its determined and timeless sound reflects the chaos of our era while respecting what fans expect from Pennywise. Written in the same place as the classics composed with the late Jason Thirsk, the album was once again produced by Cameron Webb (Motörhead, NOFX, Alkaline Trio).
Tracks like:
-
“We Set Fire Tonight,” an anthem of resistance against austerity policies,
-
“American Lies,” cutting through the fog of misinformation,
-
“Can’t Be Ignored,” balancing introspection and social critique,
-
“Never Gonna Die,” calling for an evolution of consciousness and the rejection of ancestral prejudices,
-
“Live While You Can (Time Bomb),” reminding us to live in the moment,
-
“Goodbye Bad Times,” highlighting the strength of solidarity, hope, and empowerment…
…show a band as committed, bold, and true to its values as ever.
Through their global tours, Pennywise continues to unite committed troublemakers, exposing the world’s—and their own—flaws without hesitation, while celebrating life loudly and fiercely.
As the terrifying clown Pennywise makes a comeback in popular culture with acclaimed film adaptations, the band Pennywise is also returning to their prime. As Forbes Magazine put it: “It doesn’t just float. It soars.” Pennywise? They burn everything in their path.
